Recently, the award ceremony for the 21st "Huawei Cup" China Graduate Mathematical Modeling Contest was grandly held at Shandong University. The "PrideLab" team from the GNSS Research Center at Wuhan University won the national first prize and also secured the third place in the competition topic "F". The team was invited to present a report on "Modeling and Simulation of Pulsar Photon Arrival Time Sequences" at the academic exchange meeting for the contest topics. The team members, including graduate students Zhao Long, Fu Bingchen, and Liu Ze, were guided by Professors Wang Pai and Geng Jianghui.
The team addressed the issue of modeling the arrival times of X-ray pulsar photons, starting from the two-body motion model. They built an accurate time-delay conversion model, fully considering factors such as Shapiro delay, gravitational redshift delay, and the clock-drift effect. By solving the model based on the non-homogeneous Poisson distribution, the pulsar photon arrival sequence was accurately obtained. The results were validated by comparing them with the standard profile, showing that the simulated pulse profile matched the standard profile very closely. This work provides a precise model and simulation method for pulsar navigation research and application.
It is reported that the China Graduate Mathematical Modeling Contest is one of the major events in the "China Graduate Innovation Practice Series Competitions." The contest aims to enhance the ability of graduate students to conduct mathematical modeling research and apply mathematical knowledge to solve practical problems. It serves as a high-quality platform for graduate students to improve their skills in building mathematical models and using internet information technology to address real-world issues, as well as to foster scientific innovation and teamwork spirit. Since its launch in September, the contest has attracted 20,247 graduate teams from 521 universities and research institutes both domestic and international. According to the competition regulations, a total of 242 teams (with a winning rate of only 1.19%) received first prizes in both the domestic and international tracks.
