On September 18th, 2024, an academic report was given at the Light Court Conference Room on the 15th floor of Xinghu Building, GNSS Center, Wuhan University. Dr. Panos Psimoulis from the University of Nottingham in the UK was invited to give an academic presentation “Towards sustainable GNSS solutions for deformation monitoring applications”.
Dr. Panos Psimoulis is Associate Professor in Geospatial Engineering at Nottingham Geospatial Institute of University of Nottingham. He focuses mainly on advanced applications of GNSS in monitoring civil engineering structures and seismic motions. His particular interests at the moment include GNSS time series analysis for bridge health monitoring, temporal and spatial analysis of GNSS networks for geohazards application and investigation of the potential of GNSS multipath for tracking changes.
This presentation mainly focused on two aspects. The first aspect is the cost-effectiveness of GNSS solutions, as it will focus on attempts to assess the performance of low-cost and smartphone GNSS receivers in monitoring dynamic or slow motion similar to those of major civil engineering infrastructure, such as bridges and tall buildings. The second aspect is the sustainability of GNSS solution, as it will focus on the application of optimization algorithms to select the lower optimal number of GNSS from the available GNSS satellites which can provide accurate and precise GNSS solution. Both research GNSS areas aim for the operation of low-cost GNSS network with low requirements of operation and maintenance.
After the academic presentation, Professor Geng Jianghui, Professor Nie Guigen, Researcher Wang Pai, Associate Professor Chen Dezhong, Associate Researcher Li Guangcai, Assistant Researcher Zhao Lei, Dr. Xue Chenyu from the University of Nottingham, and other attending teachers and students exchanged and discussed many details with Dr. Panos Psimulis, and everyone benefited greatly.
